Charles Johnson Got Threats After Breaking With Right, Relocated

Prominent blogger Charles Johnson announced last month on his blog, Little Green Footballs, that he had "parted ways with the right." He gave a list of reasons, including "support for fascists ... support for bigotry ... hatred, and white supremacism ... support for anti-science bad craziness" and "support for conspiracy theories and hate speech.

Some conservative readers were apparently not pleased with Johnson's critique. In a profile of Johnson, the LA Times reports that the blogger moved into a gated community partly due to violent right-wing threats.

As I talked to Johnson in his office, an alert flashed on one of his two giant computer monitors. An angry screed targeting him on another website concluded: "I think a visit to Mr. Johnson's home might be warranted. Anybody got his address?"

Such veiled threats are at least one reason why Johnson, 56, relocated not long ago. He remains in the Los Angeles area, but now is in a gated community.

The European Right, Is Meeting At Night, Doing Their Little Bigot Thing!

With ever increasing right-wing support across Europe, a New Solidaristic Alternative (N-SA) meeting of neo-nazi supporters, musicians and politicians, may be an insight into things to come.

Its a quiet evening in the Flemish town of Moerbrugge and an extreme right-wing meeting is taking place. The leader of the N-SA is Eddy Hermy, a former member of the outlawed Flemish Militant Order.

Hosting todays convention he rallies the crowd, "In our streets, girls are raped, molested and insulted by gangs of immigrants."

One of the guest speakers is Axel Reitz, a German national-socialist. Convicted of hatred towards Jews, possession of weapons and wearing nazi-symbols, he is the guest of honour, "We are fighting today to preserve Europe as the continent of the white race for our shared 1,000-year-old Arian culture."

Headlining the event is the ultra right wing, Italian band Ultima Frontiera, whose lead singer Allesandro sums up the feeling of the crowd, "Were proud to be fascist."

Are the Kings of Leon the future of Bro Music + Fashion?

As yall know, the Kings of Leon ‘crossed over’, and have entered the realm of Nickelback fans + bros who are ‘vibing’ for their own sense of high-end consumer individuality. In their hit song “Use Somebody”, they sing, “U know that I could use somebody…Some1 like u.” Little did Americans + bros across the world know that we would rely on them so heavily in the decade of 2k10. Ever since the Strokes put their brand of ‘cool’ into hibernation, the Kings of Leon have built a generic, accessible brand of ‘cool’ that most bros can identify with.

Bros just want good music, that ‘effing rocks’, played by a group of manbros, showing off different combos of muscles + chest hair + innovative facial hair. Bros need bandBros who do ‘kewl shit’ on guitar, and the ideal lead singer must have a voice that ‘gets you fucking jacked’, but can also ‘chill you out.’ Some songs ‘effing rock’ but other ‘are chill ditties that you can play at an open-air party where beer is chilled upon.’ Kings of Leon seem to be perfect for bros. It is also beneficial that they are ‘hot’ according to mainstream broads so that bros+broads can have a common interest.

Feel happy that the KoL just launched their new ‘fashion line.’ I feel like it will really appeal to high-end consumer bros, possibly taking away sales from Ed Hardy. I am always fascinated by general consumer decisions by bros who were born into wealthy families, have never really had any real problems in their lives’ besides ‘fitting in’ and ‘banging hot girls who they though they deserved.’ Feel like their insecurity really manifests itself when they overcompensate with high end bro fashion choices, and excessive early adoption to technology.

Decided to take a look at the Kings of Leon Fashion Line. Think this is actually ‘high end shit’, not mass produced to make mad walmart/target/pacsun/jcpenney sales [via Mary Kate+Ash 'Heath Killa' Olsens].

Ice Skating Meets Gymnastics on NBC This Weekend
No one will be walking the balance beam in ice skates. . . that I know of. . . but you will see something you've never seen before and that's a match up of top Olympic ice skaters and gymnasts performing together on stage.

The Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular will air this Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on NBC. Olympic gymnastics gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson will be leading a team of all-stars including, on the gymnastics side, 2008 Olympic silver medalist Jonathan Horton, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Raj Bhavsar and two-time World All-Around Champion Ivan Ivankov.

On the skating side, you'll see three-time World champion Elvis Stojko, 1996 World champion Todd Eldredge, three-time National champion Michael Weiss and 2007 U.S. National silver medalist Emily Hughes.

Commentary will be provided by Peggy Fleming, Bart Connor and Nadia Comenici.

To add to the excitement, High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will be there to perform her latest hit.

The pale singer, 24, who admits to being a ‘tanorexic’ in the past, will discover the dangers folk face by wanting to be orange – as shown in this picture.

H&M and Wal-Mart destroy and trash unsold goods

This week the New York Times reported a disheartening story about two of the largest retail chains. You see, instead of taking unsold items to sample sales or donating them to people in need, H&M and Wal-Mart have been throwing them out in giant trash bags. And in the case that someone may stumble on these bags and try to keep or re-sell the items, these companies have gone ahead and slashed up garments, cut off the sleeves of coats, and sliced holes in shoes so they are unwearable.

The clothing retailer H & M promised on Wednesday that it would stop the practice of destroying new, unworn clothing that it could not sell at its store in Herald Square, and would instead donate the garments to charities.

Jack White reveals solo album details

He's considering playing all the instruments himself on the album

Jack White has revealed details of his solo album, which he says he may record this year.

The White Stripes frontman hinted that he could get around to recording material for the album in the near future, though he admitted to Rolling Stone that he doesn't know what form it will take.

Asked to confirm whether he was still planning to release a solo album, White replied: "Eventually, yeah, for sure."

Speaking about whether he would play all instruments on it, he declared: "I've never done that [played everything himself]. I thought about that. That might be the challenge - to differentiate from anything else that I've done."

White also added that he doesn't know when he will begin work on new White Stripes, Raconteurs or Dead Weather material, explaining that he prefers to work without timeframes.

"It would be a mistake for me to premeditate anything, even in the next six months, to say what I'm going to do," White explained. "I honestly could be working on a White Stripes [album] in the next two weeks. I have no idea if that is going to happen. And the same with The Dead Weather. I'd rather live like this without a calendar in front of me."

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, exec producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof acknowledged that it was entirely possible that The Walt Disney Co., which owns Lost, could sooner or later produce more of Lost in some form or multiple forms—a movie, a new TV series, books. Said Cuse: “It’s a franchise that’s conservatively worth billions of dollars. It’s hard to imagine Lost will rest on the shelves and nothing will ever be made with Lost. Eventually somebody will make something under the moniker of Lost — whether we do it or not. We just made a commitment to this group of characters whose stories are coming to a conclusion this May.”

The diamond has transformed Botswana from one of the poorest countries in the world, to one of the most prosperous and stable countries in Africa. An inspiring initiative has seen Botswanas vast diamond reserves, worth about three billion US dollars a year, being used to share wealth throughout the nation.

Trade Consultant Ntetleng Masisi says they used diamonds to bring about health facilities, education and a markedly improved quality of life, Masisi says that the partnership is a necessity, "The earnings from our exports of diamonds have really done a lot for us."

But Botswanas reliance on diamond revenue means that the whole of the countrys future is now in the hands of the diamond dealers

Iris Robinson's lover named as 19-y.o. Kirk McCambley

Iris Robinson, the wife of the Northern Ireland’s First Minister, admitted having an affair with a 19 year-old man after questions were raised over her financial dealings.

As Mrs Robinson’s lover was named as Kirk McCambley, a 21-year-old cafe owner, it emerged she was facing allegations over a business venture she supported on his behalf.

The 60-year-old mother-of-three, an MP since 2001, admitted on Wednesday that she had a brief relationship 18 months ago with someone she had been supporting after a family death, and that her guilt led her to try to kill herself last March.

He was named by the BBC as Mr McCambley, a Catholic man, who was 19 at the time of the affair. He confirmed to the Spotlight Programme that he had an affair with the married woman.

It is understood that the lover set up his business in a building constructed by Castlereagh Borough Council, supported by the EU Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme and administered by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.

It has emerged that 24 hours before the surprise announcement, a BBC documentary team had confronted her husband, Peter Robinson, at Stormont with questions about the couple's financial affairs.

Asked if he was confident that neither he nor his wife had done anything illegal, Mr Robinson said: "I am absolutely certain that everything I have done has been done as it should."

He continued: "I received a letter from an organisation within the BBC. It contained no allegation against me. The BBC asked questions that can be easily answered but there are no allegations that will stand."

As part of her statement in which she admitted the affair, Mrs Robinson said of her lover: "I encouraged friends to assist him by providing financial support for a business venture."

Malaysian churches fire-bombed as 'Allah' row escalates
Three churches have been attacked in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur, ahead of protests by Muslim groups.

The administrative offices of one church were destroyed by a firebomb attack and one of the other two churches attacked was slightly damaged. The government of the primarily Muslim nation has condemned the attacks on the churches and vowed to take action.

About 60% of Malaysians are Malay Muslims and the government relies on their vote. There also significant Chinese and Indian minorities, who are mainly Christians, Hindus and Buddhists.

The controversy stems from a ban on a Catholic newspaper, The Herald, using the word Allah: the Kuala Lumpur High Court struck down the three-year old ban on non-Muslims using of the word Allah.

Some major Muslim organisations, including the Islamic political party, PAS, have agreed with the court, saying other Abrahamic religions - Christinaity and Judiasm - may use the word, but some vocal groups, including the Muslim Youth Movement, Abim, have cast the use of the word Allah as a surreptitious effort on the part of Christians to try to seduce Muslims away from Islam.

Iris Robinson business deal broke the law
The wife of NI's first minister broke the law by not declaring her financial interest in a business deal.

BBC Northern Ireland's Spotlight programme said Iris Robinson, an MP, an MLA and a councillor, obtained £50,000 from two property developers. The money was paid to her 19-year-old lover to help him launch a cafe. She later asked him for £5,000 for herself.

Mrs Robinson, who tried to kill herself after her affair, was said to be unable to comment for health reasons. Spotlight also reported that her husband Peter Robinson became aware of the money she had received from the developers. The programme said that while he pressed his wife to return the money, he failed to tell the proper authorities about the transaction, despite being obliged to act in the public interest by the

Mr Robinson said on Friday that comments and conclusions were made on the programme "without any supporting facts. While I have learned from Spotlight for the first time some alleged aspects of my wife's affair and her financial arrangements, I will be resolutely defending attacks on my character and contesting any allegations of wrongdoing," he said.

Nick Jonas: Loving Life with the Administration

Braving the chilly east coast weather, Nick Jonas was all bundled up while out in New York City on Thursday afternoon (January 7).

The Jonas Brothers hunk was surrounded by security staffers as he got himself ready for an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Currently busy touring on his new solo project, Nick Jonas and the Administration, the 17-year-old recently chatted with MTV News about how things have been going so far.

“I thought it was great,” he tells of the first show in Dallas. “It’s kind of hard to believe it’s all happening, to think I’m on tour now is an incredible thing ... after that was done I realized I’m going to be on the road for the month.”

Nick continues, “I think it is [sinking in] now that I have seen my tour bus. And people are starting to get more familiar with the material ... [Also the fan response has] been great so far, and seeing them and pouring my heart into this performance every night is a lot of fun.”

Portugal Parliament Votes to Permit Gay Marriage

Portugal's parliament passed a bill Friday that would make the predominantly Catholic nation the sixth in Europe to permit gay marriage.

Conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva is thought unlikely to veto the Socialist government's bill, which won the support of all left-of-center parties. His ratification would allow the first gay marriage ceremonies to take place in April — a month before Pope Benedict XVI is due on an official visit to Portugal.

Right-of-center parties opposed the change and sought a national referendum on the issue, but their proposal was rejected and the government's bill was passed by 125 votes to 99.

Gay rights campaigners applauded from the galleries, hugged and kissed outside the building and ate wedding cake.

"This law rights a wrong," Prime Minister Jose Socrates said in a speech to lawmakers, adding that it "simply ends pointless suffering."

Socrates said the measure is part of his effort to modernize Portugal where homosexuality was a crime until 1982. Two years ago his government lifted Portugal's ban on abortion, despite church opposition.

Gay marriage is currently permitted in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Norway. Canada, South Africa and six U.S. states also permit it.

The bill removes a reference in the current law to marriage being between two people of different sexes.

"It's a slight change to the law, it's true," Socrates, the prime minister, said. "But it is a very important and symbolic step towards fully ensuring respect for values that are essential in any democratic, open and tolerant society: the values of freedom, equality and non-discrimination."

Like neighboring Spain, which introduced same-sex marriages four years ago, Portugal is an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country and previous efforts to introduce gay marriage ran into strong resistance from religious groups and conservative lawmakers.

James Cameron Confirms Avatar 2

James Cameron has confirmed what we all expected would be confirmed – what now that the film’s made a billion bucks, and overtaken “Demolition Man” as the most profitable film of all time – once the red laser dots disappeared from his chest, and his wallet started to feel heavier : “Avatar 2” is on the way.

Aint it Cool News reports that Cameron has a trilogy in mind – we knew that all along though, right? – with the first sequel already clearly in his sight. With the technology, and the “Avatar” universe already invented thematically and creatively, the filmmaker noted that the next two films will be much easier to make. The hard work has already been done.

Cameron mentioned recently that “Avatar 2” might not be set on Pandora, and might instead fix on one of the other surrounding planets. Being that he’s signed for three films in all, it’s likely Sam Worthington will be back as the Australican Blue-Dude, Jake Sully.

Question is, Will Cameron direct the film? Doubtful. He’s a guy that doesn’t like to repeat himself, and despite briefly toying with the idea of a “True Lies” sequel, also don’t seem to be a filmmaker too interested in sequels. I’d say he’ll go the George Lucas-route, and likely produce the next two films.
